What does God look like? Jesus talks about the Father, Abba, literally Daddy. He teaches about the Fathers will, the goodness and faithfulness, the grace and mercy of the Father. To his followers, Jesus says, If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Philip, one of Jesus disciples, says, Lord, show us the Father. Like so many of our wants and needs and desires, it is a request Jesus has already fulfilled, although, like Philip, we may fail to realize it, to recognize it.

Jesus says, Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Does that mean that God looks like Jesus? The answer is Yes.

God looks like one who comes among us and loves without hesitation or condition. He especially looks like one who will love and care for those that others wont. God looks like one who can pull us out of the treadmills and ruts of our lives and refocus us on what is real, and lasting and important. He looks like one who walks the journey with us, who feeds, heals, forgives, cares, shares, celebrates, grieves and lives right along with us. Does that sound like look like Jesus? The answer is Yes.

And Jesus says, Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing … will do even greater things than these (John 14:12). Does that mean that God looks like you? The answer is Yes.

A Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, I thank you that you have made me in your image. I thank you for the gift of Jesus who shows me what you look like … who shows me what I look like; the real me. Help me to simply be the real me … the loving, caring, sharing me that you created me to be. Amen.

Philippians 4:5-7

Some of you may have heard of Joseph Scriven. He was a brilliant young man engaged to a beautiful lady. On the night before the wedding, his finance was pulled from pond where she had accidentally been thrown from a horse while crossing a bridge and drowned. He never overcame the shock, and in the sadness of the latter portion of his life, he wrote a poem, now known as the hymn What a Friend We Have in Jesus. It was first published, as a poem, in the Port Hope Guide in 1870. The first verse reads as follows: What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!

Prayer: Lord, in the midst of our pain and suffering, as we come to you in prayer, grant us your peace. Amen
