Verse of the Day:
The field of the poor may yield much food,
but it is swept away through injustice.
- Proverbs 13:23-23
Voice of the Day:
Since when do you have to agree with people to defend them from injustice?

Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”
- Matthew 19:8-10
Voice of the Day:
There is nothing to make you like other human beings so much as doing things for them.

Verse of the Day:
[F]or we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us; on him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again, as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.
- 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
Voice of the Day:
We have to face the fact that either all of us are going to die together or we are going to learn to live together, and if we are to live together we have to talk.

Verse of the Day:
Speak out for those who cannot speak,
for the rights of all the destitute.
Speak out, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
- Proverbs 31:8-9
Voice of the Day:
The Talmud reads, “Never pray in a room without windows.” Never pray without the world in mind, in other words. The purpose of the spiritual life is not to save us from reality. It is to enable us to go on co-creating it.

A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother.’” He replied, “I have kept all these since my youth.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”
- Luke 18:18-22
Voice of the Day:
Thou shalt not be a victim. Thou shalt not be a perpetrator. Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.

Verse of the Day:
Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets
who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace”
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against those
who put nothing into their mouths.
Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
and darkness to you, without revelation.
The sun shall go down upon the prophets,
and the day shall be black over them;
the seers shall be disgraced,
and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
for there is no answer from God.
- Micah 3:5-7
Voice of the Day:
The single clenched fist
lifted and ready,
Or the open asking hand
held out and waiting.
Choose: For we meet
by one or the other.

“Choose,” from Chicago Poems.

Verse of the Day:
Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves?”
- Luke 9:23-25
Voice of the Day:
We are afraid of religion because it interprets rather than just observes. Religion does not confirm that there are hungry people in the world; it interprets the hungry to be our brethren whom we allow to starve.
