Pastor Dan has been named this year’s Patriotic Speaker by the Bristol Fourth of July Committee. This is a great honor for Pastor Dan and for First Congregational Church. Bristol’s “Second Highest Honor” after being named Grand Marshall, the Patriotic Speaker is responsible for kicking off the 4th of July festivities.
The Bristol Patriotic Exercises and 4th of July Parade were started by our congregation and Rev. Henry Wight in 1785. In fact, Rev. Wight was the first Patriotic Speaker and held this role for over 40 years. Like Rev. Wight, Pastor Dan is also a war veteran. (Rev. White was in the Continental Army during his studies at Harvard)
Pastor Dan will deliver his address from the Colt School steps on July 5 (yes July 5 since the 4th is on a Sunday the parade must wait!) at 8:30am. Please come out to hear and support him.
In case of rain, the Patriotic Exercises are in the FCC Sanctuary!

This Saturday – May 1st the Bristol Fourth of July Committee will take to the sky over Independence Park for a very special photograph commemorating the 225th Celebration. This family friendly, free event offers southern New Englanders an opportunity to show their patriotic pride while joining together to form the numbers “225” for an aerial photograph.
The Festivities begin at 11:30am at Independence Park overlooking Bristol Harbor. Final photo placement will be at 1:15pm and the picture will be taken at 1:31pm. The first one thousand people who show up for the photograph will be given a free tee shirt. Entertainment, food, refreshments and one of a kind Bristol Fourth of July souvenirs including copies of the aerial photo will be available for purchase.
“This is really a once in a lifetime event!” exclaimed Judy Squires, general chairman of the 225th Fourth of July Celebration. “Our Aerial photo committee has been hard at work creating what promises to be an extraordinary experience commemorating this very special year. The photo will make a wonderful keepsake.”
A team of volunteers, led by Bristol resident Wayne Picard, has been working for months to arrange logistics for the photo shoot. “We’ve got everything locked in,” Picard said. “That includes the plane and the cooperation and support of the Bristol Fire Department, Bristol’s civic and military organizations as well as local churches and synagogues.”
According to Aerial photo committee co-chair Frank Fales, “We are very excited to have one of the flags that once flew proudly over New York’s World Trade Towers to put in a prominent place for the photo. This will truly be a moving experience.”
In case of rain, the event will be re-scheduled for Sunday, May 2, or – if necessary – the following Saturday, May 8. The times will remain the same, beginning at 11:30am, in place by 1:15pm with the photo to be taken at 1:31pm.

The Christian Education Committee will be sponsoring our 10th annual Children’s Carnival on May 15th, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be games & prizes, food, a Moon Bounce, a craft table and a special appearance by David Marchetti and his animal friends at noon. We will also be collecting canned goods for the East Bay Food Pantry.
To make it a success the Carnival needs volunteers to help with games, crafts, etc. Please contact Michelle Cousineau (569-1565) or the church office (253-7288) if you can help, even if it is just for an hour or two.
